Welcome to the Carinthia Open Air Museum
The Open-Air Museum at Maria Saal is the oldest museum of its kind in Austria and it is located at the cultural heart of Carinthia. The museum comprises of traditional farmhouses and yards of varying architectural design. These farmhouses have been re-located to the museum from various parts of the country. The museum helps provide an insight into the residential and economic way of life from years gone by. As well as these interesting farmhouses visitors will get an appreciation of the rural crafts that took place in the so-called "industrial area" of yester-year. There is a flourmill (Flodermühlen), a sawmill (Sägemühle), a traditional method of making charcoal (Kohlenmeiler) and a lime kiln (Kalkofen). A rural restaurant provides guests with the experience of traditional Carinthian food. Whilst visiting the Carinthian Open Air Museum, visitors will walk round the nature trail and see local plants and their habitats.
